The video itself is an Old school throwback rap classic complete with the gold chains, black hats and vintage ADIDAS that DMC brought to the game. And with a rowdy and fun rap track they still manage to deliver the themes of Christmas, chillin' in Hollis with mom for the holidays, while chasing no good elves out of the house with a broom and making sure you return Santa's wallet to him with cash in tact. Run DMC to Rock Hall of Fame

Legendary rap pioneers, Run DMC will be inducted as part of 2009's Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame class. Joining the rap group will be heavy metal rockers, Metallica, Jeff Beck, Bobby Womack, and Little Anthony & the Imperials among several other influential musicians. DMC becomes just the second rap group to be inducted into the Hall. In 2007, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted. Run DMC deserves the honor as they successfully merged genres, putting themselves and rap into the mainstream with the smash hit "Walk this Way", a mix of rock and hip-hop which featured rock group Aerosmith accompanying them. The music video is also still considered a classic on MTV to this day. The group consisted of Daryl "DMC" McDaniels, Joseph "Run" Simmons and their late DJ, Jam Master Jay who was tragically gunned down in 2002. Their induction will not only be a tribute to the hip hop genre that many expected to die out quickly, but also an honor for the man who helmed the wheels of steel throughout their career. Both Simmons and McDaniels embarked on solo careers as well, with Simmons becoming Reverend Run and starring in his own reality show, "Run's House" on MTV. Both rappers included various rock and country musical interpolations in their later works, displaying their fearlessness in continual experimentation with music. Daryl McDaniels discussed his early idols being Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, the Treacherous Three and The Cold Crush Brothers. He also added the following about his love for rock music and the group's induction: And then," he said, "when I really got into rock'n' roll, I was totally inspired by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and Dylan and all the rock'n'roll gods. For me, just to be this little rap dude from Hollis, Queens, that only wanted to be as dope as Afrika Bambaataa and his Zulu Nation, to be going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ... it's inconceivable. I can't even comprehend the reality of that. It's huge." (Source: NJ.com) Of those who failed to make the cut this year, Chic, Iggy Pop & The Stooges and War. Bon Jovi, Kiss, Yes and Chicago were all eligible for the first time ever for the Hall but weren't even nominated. This year's induction ceremony will be the first ever to take place inside the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame's museum in Cleveland, Ohio. The ceremony will televise live on April 4th on FUSE.

VH1 Hip Hop Honors & Top 100

VH1 unveiled it's 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs list recently and it's created quite the uproar amongst music fans. Coming in at #1 is the video pictured above. Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" is a political rap about challenging the system, and it has stood the test of time. Speaking of time, it also features crazy rap star, Flavor Flav, wearing a huge timepiece around his neck, which is his longtime trademark. Is it possible Flav's rap group took the prize due to his celebrity status on the VH1 Love Reality circuit? Rounding out the top 5 were the always classic, Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang. Nuthin' But a G Thang by Dre & Snoop, Walk this Way by Run DMC and The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. What may be stirring controversy is the selection of Beastie Boys' "Hold It Now Hit It" which doesn't seem to have the same effect as other hits like "Fight For Your Right" and "Whatcha Want?" but then again, VH1 wasn't always playing rap videos on its channel. Diddy's "All About the Benjamins" also made the cut, ahead of legends like Nas, the Geto Boys and De La Soul. Each year VH1 which somehow became a hip hop source over the years, picks out several rap stars to honor. This years honorees include Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Naughty By Nature, Slick Rick and Too $hort. All of the aforementioned have important spots in hip-hop, widening the genre to different listeners. Of the honorees I'd pick De La as one of the most creative and influential, but Slick Rick is definitely a very close second. RUN's Girls: Vanessa & Angela Simmons

One of the more popular celebreality shows MTV has in rotation is "Run's House". It follows the adventures of Reverend Run as he and his family go through various trials and tribulations. It also features heavily the careers of his two talented and beautiful daughters, Vanessa and Angela. Vanessa is Run's oldest daughter, who appeared on the soap opera Guiding Light as the character Lola. She's graduated from St. Johns University, has been a Ford Model and was voted one of Maxim's Hot 100 People in 2006. She also has launched Pastry Footwear under Run Athletics Shoeweather. You may have seen the episode of Run's House where she was cooking up concepts for the Cake Collection of footwear, inspired by pastries.. Angela Simmons is Run's younger daughter who's also very entertainment, fashion & business-minded. On the show she started working on her own magazine. She currently attends the Fashion Institute of Technology after graduating from High School of Fashion Industries. She's current editor for Word Up! magazine's publication called "Angela's Rundown". She's also been somewhat of a hip hop honey, as she was featured in the Bow Wow video, "Shortie Like Mine". Angela also helped big sister Vanessa in launching the Cake collection of the Pastry Footwear. RUN's House has currently hit 4 seasons and continues to be a successful show as Rev Run tries to instill family values despite living the good life his RUN DMC fame has afforded him and the family. Re-runs of RUN continue to run on MTV2 in mini-marathon style.

Run DMC - Kings of Rap

Run DMC: Kings of Rap Run DMC is the reason for the mainstream success of rap today. Together with Beastie Boys they really started to bring hip hop and rap music onto the radio airwaves, into music videos and into mainstream pop culture. The group consisted of two emcees; Daryl "DMC" McDaniels and Joseph "Run" Simmons; and 1 DJ: Jason "Jam=Master Jay" Mizell. Run is of course related to famous Hip Hop mogul, Russell Simmons, a founding father of Def Jam Records. Run DMC the group definitely spawned a movement in hip hop to wear Adidas, gold rope chains and Kangol hats as well. Their hit records caught the attention of many and began to introduce rap more to society. Run DMC's 1986 album, Raising Hell was a tape that stayed on play in many walkmens back in the day, and set made records as the most sold rap album of all-time (back then). It contained several hit songs such as: "My ADIDAS", "Peter Piper", and of course, "Walk This Way". They went on to have other hits as well such as the Christmas Classic, "Christmas in Hollis"; "It's Tricky", which had the memorable MTV video, "Run's House", "Mary Mary" and their comeback joint, Down with the King (featuring Pete Rock). Run DMC also made contributions to World Wrestling Entertainment. They provided the theme song for Wrestlemania V in 1989 known as "Wrestlemania Rap". They later recorded the theme song for the team of wrestlers known was D-Generation X called "The Kings" in 1999. DMC also had a part on the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack. The most unfortunate incident from DMC's history would have to be the loss of Jam Master Jay on October 30 2002. Jay was shot and killed by suspected drug lord Kenneth Supreme McGriff. It was a sad loss for the group as well as the hip hop music world. According to an interview Reverend Run did with Grandslam magazine, "No one will want to see Run-DMC without Jam Master Jay. Run-DMC is officially retired." Since the unfortunate loss, DMC released a solo album in 2006 called Checks Thugs and Rock N Roll, which featured a track sampling a Harry Conwick Jr song. He is going to release an album called: "This Iz Tha Final Kut". The album will feature DJ Run, BDP, N.W.A., Kid Rock, as guests. DMC's new group, Tha All-Stars which consists of Nas, MC Ren, Jay-Z, and newcomer, Knock-Out will also be featured on the album, produced by DMC. Run Simmons has gone on to enjoy success as a solo artist, releasing the 2006 album Distortion which featured "Mind on the Road", a song included in the Madden NFL video game. He's also a practicing reverend, and star of the MTV reality show "Run's House", which has now been on for several seasons. The show chronicles the tales of Run and his family including his 5 kids and wife. Run DMC will forever be responsible for sparking the hip hop revolution. While some say the current level of rap has watered down the radios, Run DMC definitely had mainstream appeal and great music. The legacy of these 3 kings of Hip hop will forever live on. A Classic Holiday Video: Christmas in Hollis by RUN DMC

One of the all-time best rap/Christmas collaborations is easily the RUN-DMC tune, Christmas in Hollis. The Christmas rap track has stood the test of time and continues to be a traditional song played at parties and in many households each season. Parents may not have fully embraced it, but the track definitely has it's place in the history of rap and the Holidays. The video is also something special, complete with a mischievous elf who's determined that there's quite a few naughty ones out there. We also see the Adidas-wearing Run DMC (including the late Jam Master Jay) take a trip to a snow-filled park and see a bag of money dropped by Santa. They learn the true meaning of Christmas is to give the money back, and when you do Santa rewards your efforts. The elf learns the lesson of "never try to steal a rapper's gold rope chain necklace when his mom's watching". They just don't make rap videos like this any more. Run's House & Loss

An unfortunate episode to kick off the new season of MTV's "Run's House", found the Simmon's family losing its latest member. Victoria Anne Simmons died at birth on September 26, 2006 due to serious illness. Run's family was able to pull together despite tragedy and find strength in each other's comfort. The episode goes a long way to show us that even superstars aren't impervious to personal tragedies and loss. We tend to put most celebrities up on a pedestal which makes us mock them, poke fun and find reasons to basically mask jealousy of their status. But seeing personal loss you can't help but realize the superstar status doesn't mean they don't face similar issues to ourselves. Run's a pioneer from the hip hop world and you've gotta appreciate his contributions and the way he raises his family. You can't help but see that Run is one celebrity who takes the raising of family serious and imparts values upon his children. This latest episode showed that as well in that they gathered to pray and comfort one another, and that Run went to individually talk to each of his 6 children. Rest in Peace to Victoria Anne Simmons who did not make it to this world so many take for granted.

Top 20 Rap Albums All Time

Here's my top 20 rap albums of all time...Ranked in terms of their impact upon me and my love for the music.. 1) "Licensed to Ill" - Beastie Boys - The rock/rap crossover appeal lured me in, and I was hooked for good 2) "Raising Hell" - RUN DMC - Wow I can remember playing this tape over and over in my walkman on trips with my parents..I bet they wish I never got a walkman ;) 3) "The Low End Theory" - A Tribe Called Quest - This tape and group is what really got me into rap, their style was so unique and varied and the beats were full of soulful bass and horns, strings and just good stuff. 4) "Death Certificate" - Ice Cube - Another one I listened to quite a bit. Yes it was gangsta, and violent and full of racist ideas and suggestions, but its an eye opener for sure. 5) "De La Soul is Dead" - De La Soul - Another group like Tribe who really fueled my love for rap. Their creativity is unparalleled and this concept tape was amazing. 6) "The Chronic" -Dr Dre - Another one that along with Ice Cube really got me into that gangsta westcoast scene. 7) "Paid in Full" - Eric B & Rakim - Most people know this has to be in a top 10 for greatest rap albums. I bought it later than sooner (like 1997) but even so I recognize its major importance to the genre. 8) "Straight Outta Compton" - N.W.A. More gangsta, got this album late too, but I knew it had to be part of my collection. 9) "Illmatic" - Nas - My alltime favorite rapper with his 1st debut album, and a definite classic 10) "Reasonable Doubt"/"Black Album" (tie) - Jay Z - Very hard to call this one, one album marked the start of a great career, the other was the "supposed"end. But both are extremely introspective & deep. 11) "Ready to DIE" - BIG - RIP to one of the all time greatest, baby baby. 12) "Enter the 36 Chambers" - Wu Tang Clan- I remember first getting my hands on this from my roommate at UCONN and loving the rawness of the combined talents of this group..amazing style. 13) "The Infamous" - Mobb Deep - I remember the hype that built up before this release dropped, and it definitely lived up to it..It sure bumped the bass out of our 81' Corolla ;) 14) "Fear of a Black Planet" - Public Enemy the rap revolutionaries..Another group with alot to say. 15) "The College Dropout" - Kanye West - This really should be higher because it has so much meaning to me, just the concept of Kanye's career and what he's come through to get where he is. 16) "93 Til Infinity" - Souls of Mischief - These guys were interesting, because they came from the West Coast but had a nitty gritty underground style,like the Native Tongues..fresh. 17)"The Fix" - Scarface - I used to listen to this album over and over while driving for a job I had, it was rare at the time because there wasnt many good rap albums out..but this one is solid start to finish. 18)"Me Against the World" - 2PAC - An all time rap top 20 list needs to include BIG & Pac, two of rap's finest. This album's title track is legendary. 19) "The Score" - The Fugees - Classic hip hop, soulful singing, reggae and rap all in one. 20) "Can I Borrow a Dollar?" - Common Sense - This one will surprise people, but I remember getting his tape off a recommend buy in "Source" magazine. And it mesmerized me in my walkman, because the style was just so off base and out there..and now, hes one of my top 3 faves, all time. (Honorable mentions: EPMD - Business as Usual or Business Never Personal, Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP, Redman - Whut? Thee Album, Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions, LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out)
