2011 Golden Globe Nominations for Best Picture

The night of Sunday, January 16, 2011, the stars of Hollywood will assemble for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The major award show will honor the brightest and best achievements for the past year in movies and television.

It could be a big night for several actors and specific shows/movies. One category that many people will be particularly interested in will be the Best Picture for Drama. The contenders for this award include "The Social Network" which recently won the Critics Choice Award. The movie tells the tale of Facebook's creation and it's young CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield co-star in the film which only was second in ratings to "Toy Story 3" from critics in 2010.

Competing with "Social Network" will be "The Fighter" which features Mark Wahlberg as boxer 'Irish' Micky Ward. Christian Bale recently won a Critics Choice Award for this film as the crack addict brother/trainer of Micky, named Dicky. Bale may be taking home the Globe as well.

News: Sofia Vergara nothing fits her for Golden Globes?!

Natalie Portman also won an award for her dark performance in "Black Swan" at Critics Choice 2011. Portman may repeat with a win Sunday night, and hopes that "Black Swan" can become the "Golden Swan" by winning best picture.

Also in competition for this category are "The King's Speech" starring Colin Firth and "Inception" starring Leo DiCaprio. "Inception" scored big at the box office, but has received mix reviews from critics. The films is considered an epic sci-fi/action/drama masterpiece which was directed by Christopher Nolan of "Dark Knight" fame. "King's Speech" is currently in rotation at theaters along with most of the other nominees. The expectation though is that the story of Facebook will get the "Like" tonight when it comes to Best Picture of 2010.

Golden Globe Awards 2011 will start at 8PM EST on NBC in hi-definition!

2009 Oscar Nominations a Curious Case

brad pitt benjamin button

Leading the way for the 2009 Oscar nominations is "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" which led all Academy Awards contenders Thursday with 13 nominations. Brad Pitt was included in the Best Actor category while the movie itself is up for Best Picture. Button director David Fincher is also nominated in the Best Director category.

Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category as well as Josh Brolin (Milk), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) and Robert Downey Jr. for the comedy "Tropic Thunder". While Ledger has the nomination it was a dark day otherwise for Dark Knight. The movie failed to be included in either the Best Picture or Best Director nominees. This year Heath Ledger may become only the second actor to win the award posthumously, as he already has won the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Batman's arch-nemesis, The Joker.

Rounding out the Best Picture category are "Milk", "Frost/Nixon", "Slumdog Millionaire", and "The Reader". Slumdog was second in the nominations to Benjamin Button with 10. According to Newsday.com, Brad Pitt and partner Angelina Jolie will be attending the awards ceremony both as nominees this year. Jolie has been nominated for best-actress in "Changeling", a story of a missing child.

There were 10 bridesmaids dressed in black gowns and the wedding took place under magnolia trees full of thousands of white roses.

Horror Movies Revisited 2009

(Odette Yustman stars in "The Unborn")

It seems there's no original ideas left in Hollywood, because once Horror movies start getting remade, that means they're at the bottom of the barrel. For years horror is what has been innovative and the most original in movie concepts. We've had Freddy in all sorts of cool nightmare scenarios, Jason going to hell, Jason & Freddy facing off, and the Alien taking on the Predator. Maybe those battle-style flicks are the way to go. How bout Leprechaun vs. Chucky? Ok, maybe not.

There's remakes in the works for both Freddy and Jason, with their original movies being recreated. The end results will surely be interesting, and it's unknown how longtime fans of these two villains will welcome their new makeovers. It seems strange because you'd expect them to just add another sequel to the 15 or so Freddy or Jason movies. Now instead they get remade just like superheros such as Superman & The Dark Knight. But it's not like we couldn't see this coming. Godzilla got a makeover, as did King Kong not long ago by Peter Jackson.

One new movie of interest is "The Unborn" directed by David Goyer. The flick which arrives January 9th stars the ultra-sexy Odette Yustman in what looks like a movie similar to "Omen" meets "The Exorcist" & The Grudge. The plot synopsis says it's about a young woman fighting off the spirit trying to take her over. The spirit is in the form of her unborn twin brother who has somehow aged into a boy. The previews reveal more similarities to The Grudge. Creepy little boy (Damien/Grudge boy) with odd skin complexion and dark house full of weird stuff, it's all in place. It's also got Gary Oldman playing a rabbi, but not sure if that's some sort of ode to Exorcist. Luckily Miss Yustman will make the movie a lot more entertaining as will hip-hop honey Meagan Good. A PG-13 rating will bring in plenty of moviegoers during its debut.

And don't forget the latest gimmick which will definitely score big at the Box office on January 16th and beyond. "My Bloody Valentine 3D" features a sinister serial killer wearing a gas mask and using a pick axe to hunt down victims in a mining town. Yep it's a remake, but they added the extra incentive of 3-D to draw audiences to the movie. It's sure to work as Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D did reasonably well despite a bad movie. Expect more 3-D films to roll in once this one proves the formula works no matter what the plot or level of acting.

Deceased Entertainers of 2008

bernie mac comedian
(Original King of Comedy, Bernie Mac, 10/5/57 - 8/9/08)

The past year saw many entertainment legends and stars pass away. Several went before their time, although it's hard to say when anyone's time really is. Notably, Heath Ledger and Bernie Mac passed away, both with continuing careers in entertainment. Ledger, who was just shy of 30, has what many say could win him a posthumous Oscar for his role as "The Joker" in "The Dark Knight". Bernie Mac the legendary comedian ("The Original Kings of Comedy" tour) and actor who appeared in hit films such as Transformers, Bad Santa and the very popular Oceans series was just 51 years of age.

The music world lost several talents as well including Bo Diddly, a member of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, and Isaac Hayes who did the Shaft theme. In what could be called an eerily strange day of death, former actress, singer and cabaret star, Eartha Kitt, passed away on Christmas day. While she played Catwoman on the old Batman TV series, she may be most famous for her Christmas song "Santa Baby".

Add to that the legendary celebrity talent listed below, and 2008 took away some of the world's greatest entertainers and artists. Click the Wikipedia bio links below any name to get more info from their biography at Wikipedia.org.

RIP Bernie Mac 1957 - 2008

The world of comedy said an untimely and unfortunate goodbye to one of its greats on Saturday. A true class act and one cool comedian, Bernie Mac passed away due to complications from pneumonia. Mac's best known for his standup comedy, his television show the Bernie Mac Show and multiple movie roles. Notable films Mac starred in were Mr. 3000, Bad Santa, Transformers, and the Oceans' series alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt. He also had a huge standup comedy hit movie alongside DL Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey entitled "The Original Kings of Comedy". This DVD continues to stay in rotation in many fans' movie collections.

Bernie Mac was personable, had a great delivery style and a sense of calm and collectivity about him. Mac's cool demeanor was even present during an episode of Punk'd. The gist of the stunt was Mac was being driven in a car, and the driver (a plant by Punk'd) chose to run a redlight. Immediately a cop car pulled the car over for running the red. The cops tried to give Mac a hard time but he kept his cool during their irritating routine. Even after the joke was exposed, it was hard for Mac to admit he had been Punk'd. He reacted calmly and coolly throughout the gag.

Mac suffered from an inflammatory lung diseases known as which went into remission in 2005. On August 1, 2008 he checked into a hospital for pneumonia. His publicist noted a day or so later that Mac was responding well to treatment and would be released soon. However just about a week later on August 9, Mac passed away due to complications of pneumonia.

Mac would be 51 in October. Although he lived just a half century, his comedic brilliance and ability to get people to laugh around the world will never be forgotten.

Read more about Bernie Mac at his Wikipedia page.
