Golden Globe Awards 2011 Winners & Show Recap

The Golden Globes went down Sunday night, as host Ricky Gervais took shots at everyone from Angelina Jolie to Bruce Willis to the hosting FHPA. One remark later in the night may have even cost Ricky Gervais further qualifications, as the HFPA president responded to Gervais' remark that the HFPA took bribes for "The Tourist" to be nominated for anything.

Nonetheless, despite some of the jabs at Angelina, Bruce and Downey Jr., the show went on and Golden Globe award winners were made for the 68th annual edition. Winning the Best Picture awards were "The Social Network" for a Drama and "The Kids Are All Right" for Best Musical or Comedy. Aaron Sorkin won an award for his "Social Network" screenplay while its director also grabbed an award. Colin Firth picked up the Best Actor in a Drama award for "The King's Speech." Natalie Portman won the Best Actress Award for a Drama for her dark performance in "Black Swan."

In television, "Glee" won a slew of awards, while "Boardwalk Empire" saw Steve Buscemi win his first ever Golden Globe. Also on the night, Robert DeNiro was given an achievement award presented by Matt Damon. DeNiro joked that he enjoyed Damon's appearance in "The Fighter," after Damon's introduction included Matt recalling various DeNiro films and then delivering lines by other actors in the movie.

A who's who in Hollywood made up the audience which featured Clint Eastwood, Brad and Angelina, Tom Hanks and an interesting table arrangement where Jimmy Fallon sat with LL Cool J and Diddy. As for presenters, everyone from Megan Fox to Justin Bieber to Robert Pattinson and even Jane Fonda were on stage. Fonda made her first appearance there in over 25 years. Also upcoming superhero stars "Captain America" and "Thor" shared the stage as well as Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans presented.

All-in-all, it was standard format for the Golden Globes 2011 award winners, as they followed suit from the Critics Choice Awards and will likely carry over to Oscar wins. Ricky Gervais certainly made his share of remarks to keep people buzzing after the event, but he may have to wonder about his friendships and potential work in the wake of some of those quips.

The night of Sunday, January 16, 2011, the stars of Hollywood will assemble for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The major award show will honor the brightest and best achievements for the past year in movies and television.

It could be a big night for several actors and specific shows/movies. One category that many people will be particularly interested in will be the Best Picture for Drama. The contenders for this award include "The Social Network" which recently won the Critics Choice Award. The movie tells the tale of Facebook's creation and it's young CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield co-star in the film which only was second in ratings to "Toy Story 3" from critics in 2010.

Competing with "Social Network" will be "The Fighter" which features Mark Wahlberg as boxer 'Irish' Micky Ward. Christian Bale recently won a Critics Choice Award for this film as the crack addict brother/trainer of Micky, named Dicky. Bale may be taking home the Globe as well.

News: Sofia Vergara nothing fits her for Golden Globes?!

Natalie Portman also won an award for her dark performance in "Black Swan" at Critics Choice 2011. Portman may repeat with a win Sunday night, and hopes that "Black Swan" can become the "Golden Swan" by winning best picture.

Also in competition for this category are "The King's Speech" starring Colin Firth and "Inception" starring Leo DiCaprio. "Inception" scored big at the box office, but has received mix reviews from critics. The films is considered an epic sci-fi/action/drama masterpiece which was directed by Christopher Nolan of "Dark Knight" fame. "King's Speech" is currently in rotation at theaters along with most of the other nominees. The expectation though is that the story of Facebook will get the "Like" tonight when it comes to Best Picture of 2010.

Michael Jackson Movie Tickets on Sale 9/27

Sunday, September 27, 2009 fans will be lining up for the first round of tickets for an exclusive Michael Jackson film called "This is It". The movie won't open in theaters until October 28th, and will have just a two week run worldwide.

The Sony Pictures "This is It" movie will include footage of MJ's final three months, including video of him rehearsing for his concert comeback. Jackson passed away just three weeks before the "This is It" concert was to debut in the O2 Arena in London, England. Sony has had its hands full editing over 100 hours of video footage that concert promoter AEG Live gave them from April, May and June 2009.

From CNN.com:

"Audiences will be given a privileged and private look at the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, and genius as he creates and perfects his final show," Sony said.

Kenny Ortega, who was working with Jackson to create the "This Is It" concert, is also directing the documentary.

"As we began assembling the footage for the motion picture, we realized we captured something extraordinary, unique and very special," Ortega said. "It's a very private, exclusive look into a creative genius' world."

There may be an additional Michael Jackson three-city memorabilia tour in the works from AEG Live, but that will be decided by a judge. For now, fans are lining up in large numbers to score the first tickets for this exclusive MJ show.

Eminem Bruno Stunt Insider info

According to multiple sources including NME.com, the whole Eminem getting teabagged by Bruno stunt at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards was staged. MTV's head writer Scott Aukerman cleared up gossip that said Eminem wasn't aware of the prank which saw him leave the audience angrily at the awards show.

From NME.com, Aukerman posted the following on his Tumblr account before later removing it:

"Yes, the Bruno/Eminem incident was staged," he wrote. "That's all anyone wants to talk about, so let's get it out of the way. They rehearsed it at dress and yes, it went as far as it did on the live show then."

In the incident which went down this past Sunday at MTV"s Movie Awards, actor/comedian Sacha Baron Cohen came flying into the venue above the audience, dressed as his new movie character, Bruno, in little more than some white feathery wings and a jock strap. At one point he became tangled up in his harness and wiring and asked to be lowered down, right into Eminem's lap. Eminem wound up with Bruno's ass in his face and was none too pleased, so it appeared.

Speculation had made it seem that Eminem was Punk'd by Sacha Baron Cohen, when in fact some say Eminem was mic'd up. The rapper appeared to get quite upset by the incident, ordering his crew to "get this M--------a off me" before storming out of the audience.

Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions Video Lyrics - Andy Samberg & Will Ferrell

It's the truth. How many cool guys in action movies can you recall who look back at the explosion they've just left? They just walk straight forward for the slow mo camera shot. This music video/digital short by Andy Samberg (playing Bruce Springsteen) features Will Ferrell at Neil Diamond, and JJ Abrams as well playing along. Video clips from various movies are mixed in to show just what they're talking about. Great stuff from Samberg, et al.

Here's the lyrics for "Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions" song (no mp3 available yet), by Andy Samberg and Will Ferrell featuring JJ Abrams...

Intro (Samberg):
It seems like these days the whole world's on fire.
Things keep blowin' the hell up,...
And while all those rubberneckers and looky loos stand slackjawed starin,
The real men have the nuts to walk away.

Song:
Cool guys don't look at explosions
They blow things up and then walk away
Who's got time to watch an explosion?
Because cool guys have errands that they have to walk to..
Keep walkin', keep shinin'
Don't look back keep on walkin'
Keep struttin' slow motion
The more you ignore it, the cooler you look

Samberg: Ladies & gentlemen, please join me in welcoming..
Mr. Neil Diamond!

Will Ferrell: ha ha ha....Where are we?!

Cool guys don't look at explosions
They stride for it in their diamond covered boots
They wear jumpsuits with glitter and rhinestones
And walk away in slow motion..
Keep walkin, you're cruisin..
Cherry Cherry...Sweet Caroline..
Denzel walks...
Will Smith walks...
Mark Wahlberg is wearin a hat!

Samberg: Going solo....JJ Abrams!

JJ Abrams solo
Yeah!
Okay.

Because,
Cool guys don't look at explosions,
Walk fast from the roaring explosion,
And don't think about the people you killed

2...3...4!
JJ Abrams outro

MTV Movie Awards: Eminem meets Bruno!

eminem bruno 2009 mtv movie awards
(Eminem with Crack a Bruno?)

Rapper-Comedian Stunt: Eminem leaves Mtv Movie awards!

The 2009 MTV movie awards hosted by Andy Samberg definitely was entertaining this year. Host Samberg had some great bits including a digital short music video "Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions (video/lyrics)" which also featured a cameo from SNL alum Will Ferrell as Neil Diamond. His intro was a montage of Samberg in various films such as "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Twilight". Another segment featured the likes of Leanne Rhimes, Chris Isaak and Forrest Whittaker performing various songs Samberg made famous. Presenters included the likes of Vanessa Hudgens, Jonah Hill, Sandra Bullock, Will Ferrell, Anna Farris and yes even Denzel Washington. Ben Stiller was presented an achievement award by Zac Effron, Kiefer Sutherland and Triumph the insult comic dog.

A musical medley performance was given by rapper Eminem, who did his recent hits "Crack a Bottle" and "We Made You" on stage. Later in the show, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, dressed as the follow up character to Borat named Bruno made his crazy entrance from the ceiling as a white angel, wearing a jock strap with large wings, hanging from the ceiling. As he swooped over the audience he "accidentally" became tangled in his cables and harness and was lowered down into the audience, perfectly on top of Eminem. Eminem seemed less than enthused with the character's ass in his face and began letting out expletives to his entourage to "get this m-----a off me". After his crew had pushed Bruno around and off Em, the rapper got up and seemed to storm out of the audience saying "this is stupid. As always anything involving the guy who plays Borat (Sasha Baron Cohen) and Slim Shady is going to get crazy. Check out the clip below of Eminem teabagged by Bruno!

Twilight was the big winner of the night picking up the majority of the awards including Best Movie (voted on by MTV viewers), beating out High School Musical 3, the Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire. In another crazy unplanned moment Twilight actress Kristen Stewart drops her award as she nervously made it through her acceptance speech. Stewart and her co-star, rumored off-screen love interest Robert Pattinson also won the award for "Best Kiss" then teased the audience with a near kiss on stage. Sneak peak clips & trailers were also shown for both "Transformers 2" and the sequel to Twilight, New Moon.

All in all this was probably one of the more entertaining MTV Movie Awards in recent times. If you get the opportunity, make sure to TIVO, DVR or tape it (if people still use tapes).

Potfest the Movie Coming Soon?

Towards the end of the ridiculously hilarious 2006 movie "Beerfest" there's a bit about Potfest with Willie Nelson and a statement involving "Potfest is Coming Soon". So naturally fans of Beerfest are talking about a Potfest movie being released. The comedy group Broken Lizard are the ones behind Beerfest and claim in an interview that the "Potfest Coming Soon" was really just a joke of a publicity stunt. However, it may come to life and could follow in the footsteps of other popular cannabis laced movies such as Half Baked and Dazed & Confused.

Beerfest Blu-Ray & DVD

According to their IGN.com interview back in 2006, Kevin Heffernan of Broken Lizard had the following to say regarding bringing "Potfest" to life:

"There's one reaction to Beerfest we're surprised about," says Kevin Heffernan. "We're always asked, 'Are your going to make Potfest? It was just a joke. We really weren't serious about it until everyone said they loved the idea so much. A lot of people are really interested in whether or not we're going to make it, so we've been considering the potential for this. We're talking about doing something, but it's just talk right now."

And one of the things they're talking about is making Potfest an animated movie.

Heffernan explains, "It will, of course, be a sequel to Beerfest. But we're thinking maybe we might make this one animated. An R-rated, animated comedy. You don't see many of those."

The people at Broken Lizard formed at Colgate University as a sketch comedy group. They relocated to New York and have after doing stand up comedy for quite some time they began releasing various comedy flicks. Included in the Broken Lizard's list of releases are hits like Super Troopers, Dukes of Hazzard, Club Dread, and Beerfest. At this time a Potfest movie does not seem like a reality although it's still buzzing on the internet and being considered by Broken Lizard. The next movie from the Lizard is Slammin' Salmon with a cast including Broken Lizard, Michael Clarke Duncan, Cobie Smulders, April Bowlby, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Olivia Munn and Will Forte. The Lizard also has movies called "Alpha Males", "Ambulance Chasers" and "Run for the Border" in the works in conjunction with other studios. Stay tuned as more news develops on the Potfest front!

2009 Oscar Nominations a Curious Case

brad pitt benjamin button

Leading the way for the 2009 Oscar nominations is "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" which led all Academy Awards contenders Thursday with 13 nominations. Brad Pitt was included in the Best Actor category while the movie itself is up for Best Picture. Button director David Fincher is also nominated in the Best Director category.

Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category as well as Josh Brolin (Milk), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) and Robert Downey Jr. for the comedy "Tropic Thunder". While Ledger has the nomination it was a dark day otherwise for Dark Knight. The movie failed to be included in either the Best Picture or Best Director nominees. This year Heath Ledger may become only the second actor to win the award posthumously, as he already has won the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Batman's arch-nemesis, The Joker.

Rounding out the Best Picture category are "Milk", "Frost/Nixon", "Slumdog Millionaire", and "The Reader". Slumdog was second in the nominations to Benjamin Button with 10. According to Newsday.com, Brad Pitt and partner Angelina Jolie will be attending the awards ceremony both as nominees this year. Jolie has been nominated for best-actress in "Changeling", a story of a missing child.

Horror Movies Revisited 2009

(Odette Yustman stars in "The Unborn")

It seems there's no original ideas left in Hollywood, because once Horror movies start getting remade, that means they're at the bottom of the barrel. For years horror is what has been innovative and the most original in movie concepts. We've had Freddy in all sorts of cool nightmare scenarios, Jason going to hell, Jason & Freddy facing off, and the Alien taking on the Predator. Maybe those battle-style flicks are the way to go. How bout Leprechaun vs. Chucky? Ok, maybe not.

There's remakes in the works for both Freddy and Jason, with their original movies being recreated. The end results will surely be interesting, and it's unknown how longtime fans of these two villains will welcome their new makeovers. It seems strange because you'd expect them to just add another sequel to the 15 or so Freddy or Jason movies. Now instead they get remade just like superheros such as Superman & The Dark Knight. But it's not like we couldn't see this coming. Godzilla got a makeover, as did King Kong not long ago by Peter Jackson.

One new movie of interest is "The Unborn" directed by David Goyer. The flick which arrives January 9th stars the ultra-sexy Odette Yustman in what looks like a movie similar to "Omen" meets "The Exorcist" & The Grudge. The plot synopsis says it's about a young woman fighting off the spirit trying to take her over. The spirit is in the form of her unborn twin brother who has somehow aged into a boy. The previews reveal more similarities to The Grudge. Creepy little boy (Damien/Grudge boy) with odd skin complexion and dark house full of weird stuff, it's all in place. It's also got Gary Oldman playing a rabbi, but not sure if that's some sort of ode to Exorcist. Luckily Miss Yustman will make the movie a lot more entertaining as will hip-hop honey Meagan Good. A PG-13 rating will bring in plenty of moviegoers during its debut.

And don't forget the latest gimmick which will definitely score big at the Box office on January 16th and beyond. "My Bloody Valentine 3D" features a sinister serial killer wearing a gas mask and using a pick axe to hunt down victims in a mining town. Yep it's a remake, but they added the extra incentive of 3-D to draw audiences to the movie. It's sure to work as Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D did reasonably well despite a bad movie. Expect more 3-D films to roll in once this one proves the formula works no matter what the plot or level of acting.

See a preview trailer for The Unborn at YouTube.

Notorious Movie & Soundtrack 09'

notorious soundtrack album cover

Coming January 16th, 2009 is the new movie Notorious which is a biopic featuring the story of Christopher "BIG" Wallace's life and death. According to IMDB, there's no rappers playing themselves in this one, it's all actors and actresses taking the roles of Lil' Kim, Lil Cease, Puffy Combs and Suge Knight. Faith Evans and Tupac Shakur are also part of the story, as they should be. Playing the role of Christopher Wallace, The Notorious BIG, will be Jamal Woolard (Brooklyn rapper "Gravy"). Woolard's only other film on his acting resume is 2006's "The Come Up" a documentary featuring various rappers, where Woolard appeared as himself. Woolard has another claim to fame. He was shot in the rear outside the Hot 97 radio station just moments before he went upstairs and gave an interview to Funk Flex. Don't expect any Oscar-type role here, but Woolard definitely has the size and similar look for the part. (Read more about Woolard at Reuters article)

As for the Notorious Soundtrack, it features some of BIG's greatest hits, unreleased tracks, remixes and new songs from Bone Thugs N Harmony, Jadakiss and Jay-Z. Jay-Z's Brooklyn Go Hard has already been leaked and in heavy circulation online. The track's produced by Kanye West and features Santogold as well. There's also a new version of "One More Chance" which features the late BIG's son, CJ, and BIG's widow Faith Evans appears on several tracks as well.

Deceased Entertainers of 2008

bernie mac comedian
(Original King of Comedy, Bernie Mac, 10/5/57 - 8/9/08)

The past year saw many entertainment legends and stars pass away. Several went before their time, although it's hard to say when anyone's time really is. Notably, Heath Ledger and Bernie Mac passed away, both with continuing careers in entertainment. Ledger, who was just shy of 30, has what many say could win him a posthumous Oscar for his role as "The Joker" in "The Dark Knight". Bernie Mac the legendary comedian ("The Original Kings of Comedy" tour) and actor who appeared in hit films such as Transformers, Bad Santa and the very popular Oceans series was just 51 years of age.

The music world lost several talents as well including Bo Diddly, a member of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, and Isaac Hayes who did the Shaft theme. In what could be called an eerily strange day of death, former actress, singer and cabaret star, Eartha Kitt, passed away on Christmas day. While she played Catwoman on the old Batman TV series, she may be most famous for her Christmas song "Santa Baby".

Add to that the legendary celebrity talent listed below, and 2008 took away some of the world's greatest entertainers and artists. Click the Wikipedia bio links below any name to get more info from their biography at Wikipedia.org.

Eva Mendes has The Spirit

eva mendes in the spirit as sand saref
(Eva swoops in to seduce The Spirit)

Tis' the season for the sexy women of "The Spirit"! The new picture by Frank Miller of Sin City & 300 fame opens in theaters Christmas day 2008. It'll be competing with two juggernaut stars in Brad Pitt (Benjamin Button) & Will Smith (Seven Pounds) on the same day, but the femme fatales just might take this one. During a recent interview on Regis & Kelly, actress Eva Mendes even mentioned she plans to buy herself a ticket to her own movie, Christmas day. Bet that theater does some business..

The Spirit's plot centers around a dead rookie cop, Denny Colt, who comes back from the dead as a masked superhero (played by Gabriel Macht) to fight crime in Central City. His nemesis is the "Octopus" played by Samuel L. Jackson, as well as a bevy of beauties who stand in his path as well. Included in these powerful female adversaries are Eva Mendes as "Sand Saref", Scarlett Johansson as "Silken Floss", and Jamie King as "Lorelei Rox". According to Mendes her character Sand Saref is a tough woman who's had 14 husbands, all who have wound up dead...some by accident, and some not so accidentally. Saref is also the only woman capable of breaking the Spirit's heart.

the spirit movie posters scarlett eva jamie king

The film will feature a look and feel very similar to Sin City. The gritty black, white and grey with splashes of color here or there and a dramatic on-screen comic book translation unlike any other superhero flicks you've seen. That's not to say this is going to outdo the Dark Knight or Batman by any stretch of the imagination, but between the sultry, seductive female villains and the visual atmosphere of the movie itself, it may be well worth the price of admission.

See the trailers for The Spirit here at Apple.com or alternately here at Youtube.com.

Beyonce the New Wonder Woman?

beyonce knowles head shot

Hollywood's hottest superstar Megan Fox has already taken her name off the table for the role of Wonder Woman in the TBA movie by DC Comics & Warner Brothers. Since that news, there's been recent rumors and murmurs that the role could be taken by Miss Foxy Cleopatra, aka the singing sensation from Dreamgirls, aka the girl in Pink Panther (a movie many have forgotten about), Miss Beyonce Knowles. Recently, Beyonce exposed her desire to play a lighter role than her recent drama films have had her in.

Beyonce gave the following to the LA Times when asked about the role of Wonder Woman:

After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself, 'OK, I need to be a superhero.' Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotional. But there's also an action element that I would enjoy... I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? It would be great. And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It's time for that, right?

I would definitely have to keep it right for that costume. The way that Lynda Carter wore it, she was sooo fine. She was amazing. I saw her costume at the Met. Her waist was unbelievable. It was pretty crazy, actually, her proportions. But I love Wonder Woman and it'd be a dream come true to be that character. It sure would be handy to have that lasso. To make everybody tell the truth? I need that. It would come in very handy.

We can dream right? Just imagine Beyonce donning the Wonder Woman costume, and what type of music video might develop from this! Maybe a collab with her Boy Wonder, Jay-Z? After all, Jay-Z's Kingdom Come was an ode to DC Comics superhero Superman. Beyonce's upcoming movie is Cadillac Records which also features rap star Mos Def. She's also been working on her next studio album, and has two singles out "If I Were a Boy" and "Put a Ring on It".

Spiderman 4, Say Hello to the Bad Guys...

Haven't had your fill of Superhero flicks yet? Well the rumor mill continues buzzing as Spiderman 4 is in the works for 2010, and there's possibly a Spiderman 5. The current rumors from Cinematical.com claim that Spiderman will have two villains to contend with in his fourth installment.

First up is Lizard, who will be the villain that professor Dylan Barker turns into. Barker's a recurring character in the films. You may remember Barker, who was Peter Parker's college mentor/friend, a one-armed professor. The comic's storyline has Barker inject himself with a type of lizard DNA in attempt to re-grow his missing arm, but like most of the experiments in Spiderman, this one goes awry. Barker eventually becomes a villainous man/lizard who will become a challenging foe for Spidey.

And if that's not enough there's also going to be Carnage..That's the villain's name. In the comics, Carnage is Cletus Kasady a serial killer who meets Eddie Brock in prison. During their meeting, Kasady comes into contact with some of that alien "symbiote" goop that turned Brock and Parker into badass Venom in Spidey 3.

The source of all these scoops according to Cinematical.com is FreezeDriedMovies.com.

So expect more Spidey adventures to come, as well as Superman and Batman, and also a possible solo flick for Wolverine of X-Men.

Ebay is also holding an auction right now for one lucky person to have a meet and greet with the cast at the Sony filming location, and also that person will get to have a walk-on extra role in the film. Pretty cool, but the current bid as of this post? A cool $5,000! Check out the Ebay auction here.

RIP Bernie Mac 1957 - 2008

The world of comedy said an untimely and unfortunate goodbye to one of its greats on Saturday. A true class act and one cool comedian, Bernie Mac passed away due to complications from pneumonia. Mac's best known for his standup comedy, his television show the Bernie Mac Show and multiple movie roles. Notable films Mac starred in were Mr. 3000, Bad Santa, Transformers, and the Oceans' series alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt. He also had a huge standup comedy hit movie alongside DL Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey entitled "The Original Kings of Comedy". This DVD continues to stay in rotation in many fans' movie collections.

Bernie Mac was personable, had a great delivery style and a sense of calm and collectivity about him. Mac's cool demeanor was even present during an episode of Punk'd. The gist of the stunt was Mac was being driven in a car, and the driver (a plant by Punk'd) chose to run a redlight. Immediately a cop car pulled the car over for running the red. The cops tried to give Mac a hard time but he kept his cool during their irritating routine. Even after the joke was exposed, it was hard for Mac to admit he had been Punk'd. He reacted calmly and coolly throughout the gag.

Mac suffered from an inflammatory lung diseases known as which went into remission in 2005. On August 1, 2008 he checked into a hospital for pneumonia. His publicist noted a day or so later that Mac was responding well to treatment and would be released soon. However just about a week later on August 9, Mac passed away due to complications of pneumonia.

Mac would be 51 in October. Although he lived just a half century, his comedic brilliance and ability to get people to laugh around the world will never be forgotten.

2008 MTV Movie Awards Review

This past Sunday, the 2008 MTV Movie Awards came and went, quite possibly with little hype or hoopla, but that has been their mark of the past. The show takes a back seat to the MTV Video Awards. The premise of the Movie Awards show seems like it's for stars to promote their latest flicks. It's also a time for the movies that weren't recognized at the Oscars to get some nods, and stylish gold popcorn statues. Juno's Ellen Page was one of the few Oscar caliber contenders who won an award. Otherwise, awards were given to best kiss, best fight, best "movie so far this summer" and other categories that MTV producers dreamt up.

The show was hosted by Mike Meyers and included only brief slapstick and comedy. The intro featured Meyers in a spirited dance-off against young R&B star, Chris Brown. There was no clear winner in this one. Various stars appeared on stage such as Diddy, Mini Me, Lindsay Lohan, Will Smith, and Tom Cruise who presented a Movie achievement award to the Sandman, Adam Sandler. Cruise's speech was humorous as was Sandler's guitar driven performance of "Simply the Best", complete with a video screen of his movie highlights going behind him. There were just two oter musical performances on the show, with the Pussycat Dolls and Coldplay singing their latest hits.

While some of the onstage presentations and monologue moments were funny, the show seemed to lack the great movie spoofs its had in the past. In the past summer flicks were parodied such as having Jon Heder of Napoleon Dynamite in Batman. Or a parody of the Mummy featuring Snoop Dogg, Da Vinci Code with Jimmy Fallon and Andy Dick, etc etc. This year seemed to lack those, with the exception of Ben Stiller's attempt to hook up the Kung Fu Panda and Iron Man for a new movie. There was humor there, but Meyers seemed to deliver very little humor throughout the show. So quite possibly MTV has turned the awards show into a platform for its star presenters to pitch their latest projects in addition to a place to entertain.

Movie Review: Iron Man

iron man movie poster It's been out for just a few weeks, but has made box office records becoming the second best "non-sequel" comic book release, earning well over $200 million. Iron Man definitely has his share of fans from the Marvel comic world, and the movie does a great job at introducing us to this heroic man of metal.

Robert Downey Jr. takes on the role of Tony Stark, a wealthy bachelor who loves partying, women and enjoys a careless sort of attitude. He's also a weapons manufacturer and dealer, behind the powerful Stark Industries. Stark travels to a small mid-eastern town to showcase his latest Jericho missile to military personnel and prospective buyers. After the missile display is a success, the enemy attacks the military trucks, one of which is transporting Stark. Stark escapes the ride, but manages to get badly injured. He wakes up a captive of the enemy. But he also finds another problem. Shrapnel has entered his chest and is dangerously close to his heart. Luckily his roommate in the cave prison is able to build a special magnetic device to stay in Tony's chest, keeping him alive and "ticking".

From there Stark must escape from the heavily guarded cave, in the process building a powerful metal suit complete with weapons. After arriving back home, Stark has a change of heart in several ways, and devotes himself to more just purposes rather then arms manufacturing. He refines the suit, its weapons and abilities, and sets off to do battle with various enemies. The battles are worth the wait of watching Tony build and test his new suit out for a while. The movie was a little light on humor when compared to movies such as X-Men and Spiderman, but holds its own and deserves to be mentioned with those great films.

Overall, I recommend this movie to comic book fans, or fans of the high powered full force special effects movies that tend to rule the Hollywood box office. Iron Man makes great use of its cast and special effects. Things have come a long way since the days of Robocop, with Iron Man moving gracefully yet powerfully as he battles those up to no good. The movie also features a brief cameo from Marvel comics legend Stan Lee, and a short musical piece from Wu Tang's Tony Stark, Ghostface Killah.

The movie not only stars Robert Downey, Jr. but also award-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow, actors Jeff Bridges and Terrance Howard. There's a special part at the end credits as well featuring Samuel L. Jackson, so be sure to stay all the way through if possible, a sequel is in the works!
