There may have been some intense special effect fire during Eminem's performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards Sunday night, but another type of fire spoiled his party. The Detroit rapper, nominated for ten awards, lost out to Arcade Fire for the highly-coveted Album of the Year award.
Eminem had been nominated for "Recovery" for Album of the Year, and was competing against Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Lady Antebellum and Arcade Fire. In a major shocker or upset, it was Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" which rocked the decision makers enough to garner the win.
Still, Eminem won several awards on the night including the consolation prize of Best Rap Album. He beat out Jay-Z, Drake and B.o.B for the trophy. Also, Eminem rocked the stage with Rihanna and Adam Levine for "Love the Way You Lie," then assisted his mentor, Dr. Dre, in the new track "I Need a Doctor."
Other winners on the night included Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum, Muse, Miranda Lambert and Lady Gaga. Newcomer Justin Bieber saw himself shut out in two major categories, falling to Gaga for the Pop Album award and in a shocking loss, losing Best New Artist to Esperanza Spalding? (That's right, who?!)

The 2010 Grammy Awards featured a Triple threat contest between Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, with the teenage music star taking home some of the biggest awards of the night, including Album of the Year for "Fearless". Meanwhile, the Grammy show saw an interesting lineup of performances trying to stretch the limits of artistic creativity on stage. These included P!nk's cirque de soleil like performance with the superstar wearing very little and suspended from the ceiling dripping wet. Or there was the Green Day American Idiot musical performance of "21 Guns" by the band as well as their Broadway cast. Add to that a nice tribute to Michael Jackson done by Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Celine Dion, Usher and Carrie Underwood, complete with 3-D effects.
There were also a few rap/hip-hop performances, with T-Pain & Jamie Foxx doing "Blame it on the Alcohol". They had Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash come out and play his solo from "November Rain" as the track got rowdier towards the end. One of the final performances of the night was introduced by Inglorious Basterd Quentin Tarentino, as Eminem, Lil' Wayne and Drake took the stage, minus K-West. The camera caught Taylor Swift dancing to "Forever" in the crowd several times, in a happy Grammy moment.

Eminem recently issued a dis track towards Mariah Carey in response to her latest song and video for "Obsessed". By now you've heard Eminem's "Bagpipes from Baghdad" which was full of verses talking about Mariah and hubby Nick Cannon. Apparently, Mariah dismissed the notion that her and Eminem ever got together, but Eminem tells a different tale. Since Mariah's "Obsessed" is burning up the charts so to speak, Eminem issued a not so radio-friendly response. Em's new song "Warning" kicks things up a notch into high gear as he brings out the full force dis track with no holdin back. According to multiple sources including NME.com, the whole Eminem getting teabagged by Bruno stunt at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards was staged. MTV's head writer Scott Aukerman cleared up gossip that said Eminem wasn't aware of the prank which saw him leave the audience angrily at the awards show.
From NME.com, Aukerman posted the following on his Tumblr account before later removing it:
"Yes, the Bruno/Eminem incident was staged," he wrote. "That's all anyone wants to talk about, so let's get it out of the way. They rehearsed it at dress and yes, it went as far as it did on the live show then."
In the incident which went down this past Sunday at MTV"s Movie Awards, actor/comedian Sacha Baron Cohen came flying into the venue above the audience, dressed as his new movie character, Bruno, in little more than some white feathery wings and a jock strap. At one point he became tangled up in his harness and wiring and asked to be lowered down, right into Eminem's lap. Eminem wound up with Bruno's ass in his face and was none too pleased, so it appeared.
Speculation had made it seem that Eminem was Punk'd by Sacha Baron Cohen, when in fact some say Eminem was mic'd up. The rapper appeared to get quite upset by the incident, ordering his crew to "get this M--------a off me" before storming out of the audience.
Rapper-Comedian Stunt: Eminem leaves Mtv Movie awards!
The 2009 MTV movie awards hosted by Andy Samberg definitely was entertaining this year. Host Samberg had some great bits including a digital short music video "Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions (video/lyrics)" which also featured a cameo from SNL alum Will Ferrell as Neil Diamond. His intro was a montage of Samberg in various films such as "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Twilight". Another segment featured the likes of Leanne Rhimes, Chris Isaak and Forrest Whittaker performing various songs Samberg made famous. Presenters included the likes of Vanessa Hudgens, Jonah Hill, Sandra Bullock, Will Ferrell, Anna Farris and yes even Denzel Washington. Ben Stiller was presented an achievement award by Zac Effron, Kiefer Sutherland and Triumph the insult comic dog.
A musical medley performance was given by rapper Eminem, who did his recent hits "Crack a Bottle" and "We Made You" on stage. Later in the show, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, dressed as the follow up character to Borat named Bruno made his crazy entrance from the ceiling as a white angel, wearing a jock strap with large wings, hanging from the ceiling. As he swooped over the audience he "accidentally" became tangled in his cables and harness and was lowered down into the audience, perfectly on top of Eminem. Eminem seemed less than enthused with the character's ass in his face and began letting out expletives to his entourage to "get this m-----a off me". After his crew had pushed Bruno around and off Em, the rapper got up and seemed to storm out of the audience saying "this is stupid. Twilight was the big winner of the night picking up the majority of the awards including Best Movie (voted on by MTV viewers), beating out High School Musical 3, the Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire. In another crazy unplanned moment Twilight actress Kristen Stewart drops her award as she nervously made it through her acceptance speech. Stewart and her co-star, rumored off-screen love interest Robert Pattinson also won the award for "Best Kiss" then teased the audience with a near kiss on stage. Sneak peak clips & trailers were also shown for both "Transformers 2" and the sequel to Twilight, New Moon.
All in all this was probably one of the more entertaining MTV Movie Awards in recent times. If you get the opportunity, make sure to TIVO, DVR or tape it (if people still use tapes).

The official first single off Eminem's upcoming album Relapse is entitled "We Made You", a solo track by Em which is an all out verbal dis of numerous celebrities who've made headlines. For the third installment in Jay-Z's Blueprint album trilogy, Jigga's made it clear he's taking his time to create a product he and the world can be proud of. According to transworldnews.com:
The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z's third studio album since ending his retirement in 2004, was scheduled for a December 2 release date. However, the album's only single "Jockin' Jay-Z (Dope Boy Fresh)," which was released two months ago, has yet to have a video and there has been little news about the album since.
The only confirmed information about the album is that Kanye West will be heavily involved with the project's production. There were many rumors that West would be the album's sole producer. However, there have been subsequent reports that Pharrell and possibly Timbaland will also be featured on the album's production.
The Blueprint album is set to feature the original T.I./Jay-Z/Kanye West/Lil Wayne track "Swagga Like Us", as well as a remixed version featuring Nas, Andre 3000, Young Jeezy and Jay-Z. Most production for the new album will come from Rocafella alum Kanye West. The album also marks Jay-Z's final album under Def Jam contract, before he moves to recording for Roc Nation under the new Live Nation record label.
Other noteworthy records coming soon are Kanye West's "808's & Heartbreak" and Ludacris' "Theater of the Mind" on November 25th. 50 Cent plans to release "...Before I Self Destruct" on December 9th, and there's rumors of a new Eminem album called "Relapse" possibly for December 23.
"Movies Rock" is a supplement that was sent out with the latest edition of Details magazine (the one with K-Fed on the cover). Inside, they take a look at the "50 Greatest Soundtracks Ever", the ones that "opened our ears and smashed our assumptions".
Can't argue with the top 2 by Prince & The Beatles. Purple Rain is definitely deserving of the top spot. It features the classic "When Doves Cry" which stands the test of time, even if MC Hammer tried to taint its image with his prayer-based rap. The Beatles also deserving and probably were a close second. After scouring the list of 50, just a few rap/hip-hop entries made the list: Crooklyn at #28, 8 Mile at #33 and Friday at #39.
While these are good offerings, there may have been an oversight on the part of the selection committee when it comes to hip hop movie soundtracks. If you've never heard the Juice Soundtrack, check it out. It's got classic rappers and classic songs, and is overall a greater compilation than the 8 Mile offering. It features the likes of Eric B & Rakim (classic "Know the Ledge"), Naughty By Nature, Too Short and EPMD. They may have based these albums on the success of a movie, which is why several other hip hop themed OST's were missing (Menace, New Jack City, and even High School High).

Seeing that Will Smith has a new movie coming out, "The Pursuit of Happyness", it's a good time to examine some rapper turned actor roles floating around...
1)Will Smith as Ali - Top actor easily, he was even nominated for the best actor grammy award, showing that Smith has great acting range. He's done other successful roles including "Men in Black" (1 and 2), "Independence Day" and "I, Robot". He got his start as himself on the hit TV show "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", which still airs on reruns on TV Land now and is still one of the funnier sitcoms around.
2)Ludacris in "Hustle N Flow" & "Crash" - Ludacris is showing that he can be a very promising actor. His performances in the aforementioned movies were both solid. He hasn't had many roles above the gangsta, hustler or criminal type character yet, so we aren't too sure what he's got. He also hosted SNL recently. Despite the show's recent downhill sketches, Luda held his own.
3)Ice T as Detective Tutuolo on Law and Order: SVU - Ice plays a rather straight role here; the tough-guy detective with street sense. He doesnt really show a ton of dynamic range, but he's been successful for many seasons now in this role and hasn't been "kicked off", so he can't be all that bad. Many love Ice as the hard-nosed street style cop in "New Jack City" as well. Ice has been mostly doing episodes of SVU lately, aside from his "reality project" on VH1.
4)2PAC - Would probably be up at the 2 spot if his life hadn't been cut so short. He's been in great roles in Poetic Justice, Above the Rim, Grid Lock'd and several others. RIP to a true legend in rap and entertainment.
5)Ice Cube & Eminem - tie - Cube hasn't exactly had a hugely successful role yet. "XXX" was a letdown in terms of cheesy, unbelievable special efx and the overall plot and revenue made. "Are We There Yet?" I have not seen and don't plan to, so I won't comment. Cube was in the hugely successful movie "Barbershop" so he does show promise as an actor, so keep an eye out for better roles in the future. Slim Shady received rave reviews off this performance, his only one so far. It should be interesting to see if he gives more in the future, or if this was his "1 shot". I wouldn't be surprised to see him doing more acting and even directing/producing in the future.
So can Will Smith turns in another solid performance in his latest film, opening, December 15, 2006 in theaters. He is also the most mainstream rapper of the list (in terms of household name/popularity, etc), but to leave him out of a valid discussion of the roots of hip-hop and especially its comedic side would be to ignore one part of hip-hop completely.
