The Death of Record Stores

Ask someone under the age of 20 if they own a record, cassette or 8-track and they'll probably laugh in your face... Ask that same question in several years about a compact disc.... Will that also get you laughed out of the room? Atlantic Records may have your answer...

A recent NY Times article states that Atlantic records has seen an interesting milestone that many others are expecting with the music industry. More than half of the music sales by Atlantic in the US reportedly come from digital music downloads including iTunes and cellphone ringtones. According to the article, music sales in general are sinking and will continue to decline year by year. Atlantic's recent stats may be a future indicator that record stores will be shutting down in lieu of digital music sites, but even that is not encouraging in its current state.

Many analysts don't feel the digital music downloading business will ever be able to compensate for the slumping sales of physical records. Despite big court victories by the RIAA and various record labels, music piracy still runs rampant across the internet. Many businesses which offer digital downloads claim that their overall revenue is only a small percent digital. It will be about survival of the fittest as music moves into the future, and which entertainment companies/record labels best adapt and expand with the times.

MTV Moving Beyond Music TV

MTV isn't your mom and dad's music television anymore, or even your grandparents. What originated as cutting edge television with catchy special effects, sexy dance parties and tricked-out music videos is moving away from its tried-and-true, ADHD-style original format. Music video killed the radio star, and now the internet may kill the music video star. As many music fans know, the channel progressed from music videos to dance parties to reality TV & dating game shows. Don't panic just yet, the channel itself isn't leaving the air, but they are definitely finding ways to reach people besides TV. According to the latest issue of Fast Company magazine, MTV is placing bets on several alternate forms of entertainment from video games to mobile apps to virtual reality and downloadable content.

Here's a look at some of MTV's newest ventures:

The Virtual Lower East Side - a Virtual world similar to Second Life which will be set in New York City's gritty music scene. Will allow new young bands to showcase their stuff, and also has tons of advertising possibilities.

Jerry Bruckenheimer - the super producer behind many huge movies signed a deal to produce video games for MTV in December 2007.

Rhapsody America -
partnered with Verizon Wireless and Real Networks, this music store is set to challenge iTunes.

Flixwagon - a mobile-to-web video platform. On one August weekend it delivered 6 million streams of the Jonas Brothers live.

Nextornot.com
- Just like the MTV show NEXT, this online site mimics the dating concept for the web.

Harmonix - MTV bought the video game maker in 2006. They're mainly responsible for Rock Band and its sequels, grossing more than $700 mill in revenue. MTV also has been selling $2 song downloads for Rock Band by the millions.

Gracenote - partnership which makes a ton of song lyrics available to internet and mobile phone users.

dance.mtv.com - Amateur dance groups from around the world can post their videos and be rated by users of the site.

mysupersweetparty.com - A site for 15 year old girls to plan their huge birthday bashes with the help of peers.

Campus Daily Guides - Website developed for major college towns which is backed by a local search and advertising network.

As you can see MTV is definitely getting futuristic. Once known for cool animated videos by Dire Straits and Peter Gabriel, they're now making major moves into the world wide web and beyond to keep up with the hipness of social media, video viewing, interactivity and music downloads.

Back in 2005, MTV had the opportunity to buy Myspace but didn't seal the deal, drawing heavy criticism and even resulting in a major CEO being axed. MTV also failed in its attempted music download service, URGE, and its video content site Overdrive. So now MTV is definitely paying attention to what its current viewership wants for entertainment's sake. With declining numbers for its shows, MTV is willing to take the risks that music fans will want content in other ways besides the "old fashioned TV set".

Times are definitely changing and before you know it, Music TV just might be as out of date as the 8-Track or VCR!

Read more about MTV's ventures for the future in the November 2008 issue of Fast Company magazine!

Beatles iTunes Deal Coming Together?

After years of waiting and legal battles, there's been various rumors that Apple iTunes music service may finally be ready to sell the music of legendary band, The Beatles in digital format. InformationWeek.com reported that iTunes and the Beatles have "Come Together". However, the rumors have been disputed by Apple Inc. in a Billboard article.

According to Billboard.com's article:

Reports on Friday suggested that unnamed sources "close to Sir Paul McCartney" had confirmed that the Beatles catalog would be available online though iTunes and other legal services "within months." However, the claim has been met with a string of "no comments" from the Beatles' own label Apple Corps, and EMI.

"This is not news nor is it a scoop," says an Apple Inc. spokesman, declining further comment.

Efforts to clear the Beatles' music for digital distribution were long delayed by a trademark dispute between Apple Inc. and Apple Corps., which was finally resolved in February 2007.

Speculation about the catalog's arrival online increased following a Billboard interview with McCartney in May 2007, in which he said that the deal to release it was "virtually settled."

Olivia Harrison, the widow of George, had made comments in June 07' which indicated Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and reps for her late husband had agreed that their material should be made available. Paul McCartney had also told Billboard.com last year that they were "fine tuning" things but he expected an early 2008 release of the Beatles material for iTunes.

Read more about the various rumors surrounding the Beatles & iTunes deal.

Jay-Z's 2008 Plans

It appears Jay-Z has already started working on new ventures in 2008. First off, it's been reported that Jay may be working with Apple iTunes to launch a new digital record label. Playlouder.com also poses the idea that Jay wasn't selling his American Gangster album on iTunes last month. (Source: Playlouder.com)

MP3.com also notes the following about Jay's Def Jam contract which may create some conflict:

"Another obstacle is Jay-Z's current recording contract with Def Jam. Late last month, Jay-Z ended months of speculation by announcing that he was stepping down as president of Def Jam Recordings after a three-year run as an executive with the company. But he remains under contract for two more albums as an artist."

Jay also wants to open up five more 40/40 clubs, has a mixtape mashup of himself and Ghostface Killah and may be planning a wedding with Beyonce for NYC.

Amazon.com Now Sells MP3's

Most people tend to enjoy shopping at and buying MP3 music from the mega-popular iTunes Store Music. It's a great place to pick up top quality music from your favorite artists, then download with a click and transfer to iTunes or your iPod. The major problem with iTunes MP3's is that they aren't really MP3's though. Instead, they are copy-protected and basically set up so you can only enjoy them on your iPod, iTunes, or if you burn them onto a compact disc.

Now Amazon.com has stepped into the digital download market and is offering MP3's for purchase. They have over 2 million songs available and get most new albums just like iTunes does. Songs range in price from 89 cents to 99 cents, and albums range from $5.99 to $9.99. The beauty of the Amazon MP3's is that they are actually MP3's, and they don't use DRM (Digital Rights Management). This means the songs you buy and download from Amazon can be transferred to any of your portable music players or listened to on most of your media player software. Many people may not yet be aware that Amazon has started with this, but it appears some albums were even $1 cheaper than they are on iTunes, and you'd get full use/enjoyment of the MP3's.

Check out Amazon's MP3's for purchase here.

Beyonce Exposed! The Beyonce Knowles Biography

beyonce knowles bending over

Biography of Beyonce Knowles

She's the girl who's "Irreplaceable", Jay-Z's hip hop honey girlfriend, and a SI Swimsuit cover girl. She's both beautiful and business savvy. Not only does she have her own phone and fashion line, she's an extremely gifted singer and performer. What follows is Beyonce Exposed, a biography of the ultra-talented Miss Beyonce Knowles.

Beyonce's Background

Beyonce was born to Matthew and Tina Knowles in Houston, Texas on September 4, 1981. Her mother is known as a fashion designer and her father a successful salesman. The name "Beyonce" was given to their daughter as a tribute to her grandmother's maiden name. Beyonce has 1 younger sibling as well, a sister named Solange Knowles. Beyonce exposed her musical talents early at around age 7 when she was a soloist in the church choir. From there, Beyonce was a hit as she won 30 different local dance and singing competitions. Beyonce attended the High School for the Permoning and Visual Arts, and later Alief Elsik High School, both in Houston.

Destiny's Child

Beyonce's Musical Career

It was the four girl R&B quartet, Destiny's Child that really brought Beyonce's talents into the mainstream. They originally consisted of LaTavia Roberson and Kelly Rowland along with LeToya Luckett. They were also called "Girl's Tyme" and entered Star Search. The group lost in the competition, and Beyonce's dad decided to quit his job as a head salesman at Xerox to help them out. Although the family's income was cut in half, Matthew Knowles saw his daughter and her group's potential. In 1996, the group was successfully signed to Columbia Records. After several name changes they were finally called "Destiny's Child". The name has to do with a bible passage from the Book of Isiah. The group's debut came in the form of a song called "Killing Time" on the 1997 Men In Black soundtrack.

In 1998, Destiny's Child hit fame with the hit song "No, No, No Part 2" featuring Wyclef Jean. Their debut album, Destiny's Child, was also produced by Wyclef and helped supercharge the group's success. They became one of the most succesful groups of the 2000's with 4 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, two #1 albums and several Top 10 hit songs. Other songs which achieved notoriety were "Bills, Bills, Bills", "Say My Name", "Jumpin, Jumpin" and "Survivor". Their hit song "Independant Woman Pt. 2" was used on the Charlie's Angels soundtrack. Destiny's Child lost a member or 2 along the way, but continued making hit music. They have four albums in total with the final album so far being "Destiny Fulfilled". It included the hits "Soldier" and "Lose My Breath". Beyonce's 2 groupmates, Michelle and Kelly have each gone on to record solo records as well with some success.

Beyonce's Solo Career

Beyonce was unsuccessful with the song "I Got That" in July 2000, but in 2002 she was part of rap star Jay-Z's "03' Bonnie & Clyde". In 03' Beyonce brought forth her debut album "Dangerously in Love" which entered Billboard 200 at #1. It included the smash hit song "Crazy in Love" which also included rapper Jay-Z on the guest rap vocals. To this date, Beyonce's debut album has sold 12 million copies worldwide. Beyonce released the songs "Baby Boy", "Naughty Girl" and "Me, Myself and I" from the album. Beyonce won several awards for her work on the debut album including 5 Grammy Awards in 2004.

Her second solo album B'Day featured another track with her boyfriend, rap star Jay-Z, called "Deja Vu". It went on to spawn two other hit singles, "Ring the Alarm" and "Irreplaceable". The album won Beyonce a 2007 Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary R&B Album". Beyonce has not only done several collaborative songs with boyfriend Jay-Z, but also has worked with Shakira and Sean Paul, among other musicians.
