The Next Cell Phone Innovation?

An interesting article at SignOnSanDiego.com discusses the concept of evolving cell phone technology. In the future, it's entirely possible that your cell phone ringtones won't exist or be needed. Instead, cell phones will rub, tickle, scratch and tap you to get your attention. Many people might wonder "Why" we even need that sort of technology. Currently phones can be put on vibrate, but according to one Kevin Li, a UCSD grad student, the other sensations are "noiseless". Li recently presented a paper on the experiments for this concept, titled "Tapping and Rubbing: Exploring New Dimensions of Tactile Feedback with Voice Coil Motors.” Read more about the cellphone technology ideas here. For now I think most people will stick with the hottest ringtones instead of a slap or tickle from their cell phone.

The Shut Up Ringtone Craze

It's old news, so you may or may not have heard about the ringtone explosion for "Shut Up" back in November 2007. In Madrid, Spain there was a ringtone craze sparked by political debate. It seems the citizens wanted to tell President Hugo Chavez to shutup, not long after King Juan Carlos told him to during a political debate/confrontation. It immediately made for one of the more popular ringtones, igniting sales through the roof! According to CNN.com: "About half a million people have downloaded a mobile phone ringtone featuring the phrase "Por que no te callas?" or "Why don't you shut up?" leading Madrid daily El Pais reported on its Web site Monday. That's what King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez during a heated confrontation at a summit in Chile last week. The ringtone is thought to have generated around $2.2 million for the companies selling it, El Pais said. T-shirts and mugs featuring the words are also becoming a profitable business, and videos of the confrontation have been a hit on the YouTube Web site." There's probably many people around the world who want to tell someone "why don't you shut up with your ringtone" as well! Watch the Shutup Ringtone story on YouTube. Ringtone Revolution Continues...

Ringtones are the rage nowadays. They also seem to spell out who the 1 hit wonders will be in rap. A rapper releases a hot song, it becomes an anthem of that time (for several months) goes into ringtone history, and gets its own platinum plaque. Once the song is played out, the rapper isn't heard from again, the plaque hangs proudly on a wall and people probably delete the ringtone from their history. I took a look at Jamster because it's one of the more popular ringtone sites. You may have seen their commercials over and over again on MTV or BET telling you what #'s to type in to get which song. Their site seems to offer more than just ringtones though, for example they have games like "Wheel of Fortune" or "Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader?". They also cater to those looking for cell phone wallpapers and screensavers. The cell phone biz is definitely big these days, and people want to have the coolest customizations. Back to the ringtone phehomenon. It's probably best to buy those catchy anthems for your cell phone rather than that artist's entire album. You're saving yourself money and the future "why did I buy that entire album?" risk. As a fun game, see if you can predict who will suffer "1 Hit Wonder" status from the Top 10 below: Top 10 Ringtones from Jamster! Homepage 1) No One - Alicia Keys 2) Kiss Kiss - Chris Brown 3) Apologize - Timbaland (feat. One Republic) 4) Crank That - Soulja Boy Tell Em 5) I'm So Hood - DJ Khaled 6) Duffle Bag Boy - Playaz Circle 7) Pop Bottles - Birdman 8) Bed - J Holiday 9) Shawty is Da (10) - The Dream 10) My Drink n' My 2 Step - Cassidy To each his own with the ringtones..You can still get the Jibbs Chain Hang Low: Ringtones & Wallpaper!". The Rapper Ringtone Era

An article on memphisrap.com discusses how rap is already in the ringtone era or phase. Currently, rappers are able to make a catchy tune like "Soulja Boy Tell'em" or "Why I'm Hot" which translates into a good song for your phone to play. They even make more money in some cases off just this one song rather than album sales. Ringtones now go platinum regularly. The reasons for this are most likely that we are in such a digital age. People are downloading music or getting it from their friends' mp3 collections. Also with mp3 vendors such as iTunes and Rhapsody music, people can buy the individual songs they want instead of a whole album. This all translates to less overall album sales. But a ringtone can sell millions of copies and it's a harder technology for most to replicate for their phones. In some cases phones are locked preventing custom MP3 or ringtones. The article questions whether rappers should start concentrating on just releasing ringtones or still trying to put out quality albums? I'm all in favor of the latter, because a timeless album is a legacy for any rapper to have to their name. Jay-Z recently went #1 for his 10th album, tying Elvis Presley and making history. A 1 hit wonder ringtone might pale in comparison far down the road. Billboard's Top 10 in Ringtones: 1 Soulja Boy Tell'em Crank That (Soulja Boy) 2 Henry Mancini Pink Panther 3 J.
